Welcome to GotAtheism.com!
This site was created to answer some of the most common questions that religious people ask of atheists, and to address some of the most common misperceptions that people hold about atheists.
The purpose of the information that is provided here is not to convert you. It is simply to promote understanding and goodwill towards others by clearing up commonly-held misconceptions. All people quite naturally tend to fear and/or distrust things that they don't understand. This fear and distrust leads to discord and unhappiness among different groups of people.
We don't want to change your beliefs. We just want you to better understand ours. Many people think that atheists are amoral, or crazy, or evil, or stupid, or misinformed, or uneducated... or any number of other negative things. Such stereotypes are untrue, unfair, and unfounded.
With understanding comes peace and acceptance. Understanding one another helps us to all get along with one another, and to find common ground.
Unless you are already a non-believer, you undoubtedly will not agree with everything that you read on this site. Keep in mind that the purpose of the information is not to change your beliefs. Rather, it is to help you understand the beliefs of atheists.
What you do with the knowledge that you gain here is then up to you. You may want to use it to try to convert atheists to your point of view. You may want to seek out further information about atheism, or science, or reason and logic. You may just go back to watching TV. Whatever you decide, at least you will do it from a position of knowledge, rather than basing choices on stereotypes.
Our Mission Statement
At GotAtheism.com, we have two separate but related sets of goals:
For Believers
- Present information about atheism in a positive and friendly manner!
- Help people to understand that we do have a solid basis for morality.
- Let people know that atheists are concerned citizens just like everyone else.
- Answer common questions about our beliefs on topics such as life and death, an afterlife, and the meaning of life.
- Inform believers that we aren't just "angry at god", and that there are a large number of very solid reasons why we don't believe in their god.
- Encourage the fence-sitters to get off the fence by providing the extra information they need but didn't know how to get.
For Non-Believers
- Let other atheists (or would-be atheists) know that there are a lot of us out here, and that they aren't alone!
- Give people the tools and information they need when they get into religious discussions, to make sure their discussions are worthwhile.
- Encourage people to be outspoken, to "come out", and to not be afraid to disagree with others' beliefs.
- Encourage the fence-sitters to get off the fence by providing the extra information they need but didn't know how to get.
